On’yomi vs Kun’yomi
You’ll occasionally see the terms on’yomi and kun’yomi. Don’t let those terms frighten you. The kanji writing system was imported from China, and along with it a large amount of Chinese vocabulary as well. Kanji can be used for words that originally existed in the Japanese language before that time, and those readings are referred to as kun’yomi. If the kanji are using a Japanese-ified version of the original Chinese reading — that’s called on’yomi. The good thing is you don’t need to know any of that, just how each vocabulary is read. But you will notice patterns, like on’yomi is used a lot more frequently in compound words (multiple kanji), and kun’yomi is more frequent in words that have hiragana attached (that hiragana is called okurigana).
